Implementation of Mid Day Meal in West Garo Hills District


Release of funds

The Government sanction funds for provision of cooked Mid Day Meal to the primary schools. The amount is released to the respective Deputy Inspector of schools under the District. The amount is then further released to the respective schools by involving the Village Employment Council (VEC) constructed under the NREGA scheme. This is done to get the community support as one member in every household of the village is a member of the VEC. The VEC will further release the amount for cooking the food to the Self Help Groups or Mothers/Parents Association or any group who undertakes the task of providing cooked food to the children.  

The Government has also sanctioned funds as mentioned below for provision of non-recurring grant:

Rs 2500/- per school for all LP schools

Rs 2000/- per EGS (Educational Guarantee Schemes) centers.

This fund is utilized for procurement of cooking utensils, washing of utensils, aluminum bucket, and other utensils like Spoons etc.

Implementing agencies

The implementing agencies for the Programme will be the local bodies/authorities. The local bodies will have the flexibility to organize the provision of cooked food by the schools or in association with the school, parent, teacher committees, the self help groups, NGOs, Women’s group and other organization. The local bodies will also have the flexibility to decide the type of food to be provided subject to the food being wholesome and having a value equivalent to 100gram of wheat/rice per student per day.
